ABSTRACT

ALAN LYELL, well-known Scottish dermatologist was born in India on November 4, 1917. He received his medical degree from Cambridge University in 1942. He served as a medical officer in the British Army and was wounded in the Normandy invasion of 1944. Following the war he received his dermatologic training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, later joined G.H.Percival at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and in 1962 was appointed in charge of the Skin Department of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He remained with that institution until his retirement in 1980.
