ABSTRACT

SAMUEL WILKS was born June 2, 1824, in London. At the age of 11 he was tutored by the Reverend Dr. Spyers at Wallop, and when Dr. Spyers went to Alderham as head master, Wilks went along with him. In 1840 he was apprenticed to his family physician, but soon transferred to Guy’s Hospital to continue his studies. In 1848 he took his bachelor’s degree at the University of London, and in 1850 the degree, Doctor of Medicine, receiving the gold medal for scholarship at that time.
