ABSTRACT

THEODOR ESCHERICH was born November 29, 1857, in Ansbach, Germany. His medical studies were pursued at the Universities of Strassburg, Kiel, Berlin, and Würzburg, and he took his degree in the last named city in 1881. After preliminary work in Gerhadt’s Klinik he turned his attention to pediatrics, became an assistant at the University Kinderklinik in Munich, under von Ranke, in 1885, and qualified in pediatrics the following year. At the early age of 33 (1890) he became Chief of the Kinderklinik in Graz. After the death of Wiederhofer in 1902 he went to Vienna for nine years of intense scientific and organizational activity. He enlarged the clinic there by establishing an infant and new-born division and laid groundwork for the pediatric clinic. He was a zealous worker for child welfare.
