ABSTRACT

JOHANNES FABRY was born in Germany in 1860. Following his M.D., he received training at the Royal Clinic for Skin and Venereal Diseases in Bonn from 1886 to 1889. His career of four decades was spent as Director of the Skin Clinic in Dortmund. In his youth he suffered the loss of a leg, but this was never to interfere with his joie de vivre, nor with his astonishing productivity (cf. Gianotti). His contributions covered the many facets of dermatology. He was especially concerned in the prevention and therapy of syphilis and cutaneous tuberculosis, so common at that time. He recognized tar as a carcinogen, and the ubiquitous nature of ringworm. His indefatigable energy transformed a clinic of but a few beds to one of 180 beds by 1925.
