ABSTRACT

This condition is usually caused by sensitivity to certain fresh fruits and vegetables. Most sufferers have other allergies in addition, most usually to certain pollens. In a few sufferers the condition may be associated with a true allergy to other foods such as shrimp or egg, and for these the risk of a more severe generalized reaction is greater. However, in the most common form, sufferers who are allergic to certain pollens also experience a localized swelling or itching of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat immediately after contact with certain fruits or vegetables. Reactions usually follow contact with the fresh fruit or raw vegetable, although reactions to cooked foods can sometimes also occur.
