ABSTRACT
The provision of respiratory support by positive pressure ventilation is a core function of the critical care unit. As ventilator technology has progressed, new, and often more complex, modes of ventilation have been developed. Using the equipment available, and in the light of current knowledge, the clinician must attempt to select the safest and most appropriate mode of ventilation for each patient.
