ABSTRACT

The trochanteric bursa lies over and posterior to the greater trochanter in the lateral aspect of the thigh (Figure 22.2). Inflammation of this bursa causes pain especially when lying on the side in bed. Pressure on this area in a normal person causes some mild tenderness and if inflammation is present this whole area becomes ex-tremely tender. Trochanteric bursitis is often associated with osteoarthritis. If the condition is mild sometimes local heat is all that is required but if moderate to severe it usually responds to a steroid injection into the bursa. If necessary the injection may be repeated after a few weeks.
