ABSTRACT

Angina pectoris may be defined as discomfort (usually but not exclusively in the chest region) reflecting the presence of reversible myocardial ischaemia. Irrespective of priorities for surgical revascularization, coronary angioplasty/stent insertion or, in rare cases, use of invasive palliative therapies for pain relief, medical therapy is central to the management of the condition. Priorities for medical therapy are summarized in Table 9.1.
