ABSTRACT
In the preantibiotic era, anaerobic bacteria were frequently found in infections of the central nervous system.1 Their main mode of spread was postulated to be by contiguous dissemination from chronic otitis media, mastoiditis, or sinusitis. Although anaerobic bacteria are rarely found in acute meningeal infection, they are the major cause of intracranial abscess.
