Nearly 140 million people reside at high altitude, defined as elevations above 2500 m (8000 ft) (Table 1). While this is a small fraction of the world’s population, it comprises a sizable proportion of the population in certain countries or regions. The numbers of high-altitude residents are likely to increase as the result of population growth and active migration in many of these regions.
