ABSTRACT

The most recent definition of overactive bladder (OAB) by the International Continence Society is urgency, with or without urge urinary incontinence, usually associated with frequency and nocturia.1 Urgency is the complaint of a sudden compelling desire to pass urine which is difficult to defer, whereas urge urinary incontinence (UUI) is a storage phase disorder defined as the complaint of involuntary leakage of urine accompanied by or immediately preceded by a sense of urgency. Detrusor overactivity (DO) is a urodynamic observation characterized by involuntary detrusor contractions during the filling phase, which may be spontaneous or provoked. DO may be further classified as neurogenic when there is a relevant neurological condition, or idiopathic when there is no defined cause. Detrusor hyperreflexia denotes a clinical diagnosis in patients with a clearly defined neurologic disorder causing the involuntary bladder contractions, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.
