Inotropic agents increase myocardial contractility. Most inotropic agents in clinical use act on the signal transduction pathway of the sympathetic nervous system.1 Inotropism is achieved either through -adrenergic occupancy or through alterations in cyclic AMP activity via phosphodiesterase inhibition.2
