With aging of the population, chronic diseases affecting the joints, such as rheumatoid arthritis
(RA) and osteoarthritis (OA), are a major medical challenge. The pharmaceutical industry is eager
to develop new drugs that would not only treat for the pain caused by these diseases, but also restore
joint function and overall mobility. Hence, the identification of new drug targets that are involved in
the etiology of the diseases is of high relevance for the development of structure-modifying
therapies.
