ABSTRACT

The evaluation and management of the jaundiced patient is a common problem facing the general surgeon. Jaundice, or icterus, refers to a yellow staining of the skin, mucous membranes, and body fluids by bilirubin. Serum bilirubin concentration is normally between 0.5 and 1.3mg/dL, and jaundice usually becomes clinically apparent when the serum bilirubin concentration exceeds 2.0mg/dL.
