ABSTRACT

Arthroscopic evaluation of the rotator cuff not only enables a complete assessment of both the articular and bursal surfaces of the rotator cuff, but also increases the surgeon’s “window of visualization.” Although traditional open surgical management has been restricted by a limited anterolateral exposure, arthroscopy allows assessment of the rotator cuff from a multitude of angles and perspectives with minimal disruption to the overlying deltoid. This expanded window of visualization has refuted routine medial to lateral repair of the torn rotator cuff and has emphasized the importance of understanding and recognizing rotator cuff tear patterns.
