ABSTRACT

Montreal Cognitive Assessment Tool (MoCA). The MMSE ranges from 0 to 30, with most points assigned for memory

and orientation. n A score below 24 often indicates dementia.

The MoCA (authors’ preference; see Table 2.3) also ranges from 0 to 30 (https://www.mocatest.org/). n It is more sensitive to mild degrees of impairment than the MMSE. n It includes more tests of working memory and executive function

and therefore may be more sensitive to non-Alzheimer’s causes of

dementia. This requires validation. n A cutoff of <26 suggests the presence of either MCI (mild cogni-

tive impairment) or dementia, but there is substantial overlap in

scores between those with MCI and dementia.
