ABSTRACT

This chapter presents several simple examples of dynamic models, which depart from the Standard Template or extensions thereof. Dynamic Modeling of patient flows can extend beyond the basics of epidemiology, treatment changes, and compliance/persistence calculations. Dynamic Modeling technology allows for the choice of timeframe to be matched to the important time metrics of specific indications. Dynamic Modeling software can integrate this concept by combining a compliance metric with a time-based marker specific to when a patient first received a prescription. Some indications are more event-driven; they result from a single and often major physiologic malfunction which requires immediate attention. The dynamic template is simply a stock/flow representation of that approach, but with the added power of a simulation model. The dynamic framework in this case provides both a visual representation of the process and a computational tool that can be used to test the effectiveness of various intervention strategies.
