ABSTRACT

The staphylococci are large, gram-positive cocci that, in liquid or on solid media, aggregate in grape-like clusters. This morphologic pattern that typifies staphylococci is the consequence of random cell division in three planes. The staphylococci are covered with a carbohydrate surface slime that forms intracellular bridges linking the cocci together in this arrangement.
