ABSTRACT

Introduction Ectopic pregnancy occurs in approximately 0.5-1.0% of all pregnancies but this figure rises to about 5% after assisted conception therapies and to 20-30% in women with tubal damage after tubal surgery or a past history of ectopic pregnancy. A past history of pelvic infection accounts for about 40% of ectopic pregnancies. It has been argued that women with significant tubal damage should be sterilized before they commence IVF (see below). It is therefore important to understand the modern management of ectopic pregnancy in order to minimize any compromise of future fertility.
