ABSTRACT

Most psychiatric disorders are associated with disturbed sleep. Most commonly intertwined with psychiatric disease is insomnia, but excessive daytime sleepiness or parasomnias also coexist. This association is bidirectional with unsatisfactory sleep contributing to psychiatric symptoms and psychiatric disorders as well as psychotropic medications causing sleep disturbances. The disorders most likely to coexist with sleep problems are identified in Table 14.1. Improving functioning and quality of life require effective treatment of both conditions.
