ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Regenerative medicine promises to revolutionize medical treatments for a vast spectrum of degenerative processes and tissue injuries arising as a result of disease, aging, or external insults. Health conditions that are candidates for regenerative medicine-based treatments include some of the top health problems faced by aging populations in developed countries such as heart disease, diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease. Its potential relies on the use of stem cells and their ability to give rise to new, differentiated cells that can replace and/or repair injured or diseased tissue.
