ABSTRACT

Most socket reconstructive surgeries are required to address the following problems:

1. A volume defi cit following loss of the globe 2. Contracture of the socket 3. Orbital implant exposure, extrusion, and malposition

Many patients have additional eyelid malpositions which also require surgery. The patient must be carefully assessed and counseled about the nature of any proposed surgery, its risks, and potential complications. The surgery may have to be carried out in stages. The patient may have to accept a lengthy period of time without an ocular prosthesis (artificial eye). Such surgery can have profound effects on a patient professionally, socially, and emotionally. It is important to ensure that the patient has realistic expectations of the surgery.
