ABSTRACT
DEFINITION For this manual, the critical surgical abdomen is defi ned as abdominal insults and/or pathophysiological sequelae that result in an open abdomen in the intensive care unit. The principal processes associated with the critical surgical abdomen are damage control laparotomy (DCL) and the abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS).
