Over 175 million people now live outside the country of their birth – double the figure in 1975. Many are economic migrants, who may be fleeing poverty and severe deprivation. They are an important development resource for their home countries, remitting about US$80 billion per year to developing nations, compared to the $50 billion such countries receive in world aid.1
