Any device connected and controlled by the computer to input data for processing is known as an input device or peripheral. The list below shows some of the bewildering variety of input devices used on a computer system:

Bar code reader Bar code readers are used for many applications were goods need to be identified and/or priced, quickly and reliably. The bar code is a series of black lines on a white background that can be read by a suitable scanning device. The code is often printed on a sticky backed label that can easily be attached to the goods to be identified.
