ABSTRACT

Employees are an organization’s most valuable resource, but the way most organizations ‘welcome’ a new employee creates the opposite impression. This chapter discusses the importance of new employee orientation. The orientation programme really is the employee’s first exposure to the organization; therefore, it should be an enjoyable and memorable experience. Because it sets the tone, this programme needs to be a priority item. Trainers and human resources professionals can use this book to design and conduct an organization-level orientation programme consistent with the organization’s culture and philosophy. They also can use it to help train line managers and supervisors in orientating their new employees. Line managers and supervisors may use it themselves to create a more effective and meaningful orientation experience for their new employees.
