ABSTRACT

Today’s workplace offers a variety of employment options, including a growing number of contract and temporary employees and telecommuters. This chapter provides suggestions for creating a new employee orientation programme for workers at remote sites. It presents strategies for designing an orientation programme that serves employees who may spend weeks or months in training before they are placed in specific departments or branches. The orientation programme delivery methods fall into three broad categories: manager- or supervisor-facilitated delivery, technology- and computer-based delivery, and self-directed or self-study delivery. The chapter also provides a design for a supervisor-facilitated programme broken down into one-hour segments. A self-directed programme involves a combination of self-study activities to be completed by the employee on the job and frequent one-on-one meetings with the supervisor. Depending on the available resources, this approach could involve a combination of computer-based and supervisor-facilitated activities.
