ABSTRACT

Because they do not directly involve the placing of bricks and mortar together in the construction of the actual brickwork required, these matters are sometimes regarded as of little importance – ‘optional extras’ to be dealt with by someone other than the bricklayer. In reality poorly prepared and presented material will hamper the achievement of good quality work and it is in

the best interest of the craftsperson to see that materials are correctly stored and handled before they are used. Similarly, it is in the craftsperson’s interest to ensure that when the work is complete it will be respected by other trades and protected from weather or damage while the rest of the work is completed. Although these aspects of work may be undertaken by someone in the building team other than the bricklayer, it is nonetheless important that it shall be done.
