ABSTRACT

A high end storage system using a number of connected hard drives. The basic idea is to use two or more drives which are combined into a single logical drive. Data is written onto the drives in sequence. Various levels of RAID exist, and in its most sophisticated form, the data is error checked as it is written. The system offers very fast writing and retrieval. In some cases, should one of the drives fail, it can be replaced without loss of data, and without shutting down the system. Several major picture libraries use the system for archival storage of their images.
