13.1 The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (the PPE Regulations) replaced much outdated law on PPE. Unlike many of the previous Regulations (which often only applied to limited processes or activities), these Regulations require an assessment of the PPE needs, whatever the work activity. If the assessment shows PPE is necessary then the employer must provide it, maintain it, instruct and train employees in its use, and take reasonable steps to ensure that they do use it. Some minor amendments were made to the Regulations by the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002. The self-employed are also covered by the Regulations.
