ABSTRACT

The final chapter of the book explores the governance issues that sport organizations are likely to confront as they strive to develop their sport in an increasingly competitive economy and complex external environment. The preceding chapters have explained the core concepts and context of sport governance. They have explored the fundamental elements of governance structures, systems and processes within nonprofit sport organizations. In addition, the preceding chapter profiled the drivers of governance change. Progressive and innovative sport organizations will continue to face up to issues about governance structures, define and redefine the roles of volunteers and staff, develop their unique culture and strategies, manage risks and design governance systems and processes with a view to improving organizational outcomes. To consider future challenges within each of these areas of sport organization governance would be somewhat redundant. Each of these issues have been addressed in the preceding chapters. Rather, this chapter is devoted to the impact of four broad issues on the governance of nonprofit sport organizations in the years ahead. The issues and the associated regulatory challenges are: maintaining legitimacy, maintaining the values of sport and fostering volunteer involvement in sport governance, dealing with increasingly complex inter-organizational linkages and knowledge management.
