ABSTRACT

Digital minilabs make creating inexpensive prints from the memory cards or digital files as easy as shooing film, but just as the person who wants to create expressive images with film needs a darkroom, the digital photographer who wants to produce images that sing needs a digital darkroom. A digital photograph's resolution is measured by the image's height and width as measured in pixels. Most digital cameras use Charged Coupled Device chips to capture light and convert it into images. Square pixels are typically found on higher end digital cameras, but more and more inexpensive models use them as well. More and more digital SLRs are using CMOS because of the inherent advantages of low-cost and low-battery consumption. The highest-quality digital image settings are made using the camera's maximum resolution. The term digital film seems to upset students of semantics, digital purists, and even a few computer users, but it's usagenot academiciansthat will determine how language evolves.
