ABSTRACT

Information does more than support transactions, however; it is an object of exchange in its own right. Boisot (1995) elegantly showed how information is compressed, codified and diffused through his concept of ‘information space’. The more that information is broken up into bit-sized chunks, as it were, the more easily people can understand it, thus the greater its potential diffusion and use. The more it is broken up into discrete units for use, however, the greater the need for an integration function to coordinate all the elements and ‘rebuild’ a complete picture. IT can also assist firms to better manage these central functions associated with information space.
