ABSTRACT

What do you need in order to become a good coach or mentor: a life; a position; a qualification; a way of going on; techniques? Our answer to this question is, ‘All of these’. Interestingly, given the focus of this book, we think that the least important of these resources for a coach or mentor is ‘techniques’. However, most of the others in our list you will have acquired during the course of a life well lived. So all that many people need in order to become an excellent coach or mentor is the top-up of a range of techniques. You do need ‘a way of going on’ as well, and we will address that matter later in this introductory part of the book.
