ABSTRACT

After learning about selections, the next real hurdle for the digital image-maker is probably to learn

all about layers.

What is a layer? A layer is simply one picture sitting directly on top of another. Layers can be

whole photos, text, vector drawings, scanned art or anything else that can be digitised. You can add

as many layers as you want in one document, depending on your requirements. The reason for

building up these layers is to maintain the pictures’ editability. While a picture retains its layers, it

can always be edited. Flatten (or squash) those layers, so that it can be emailed, for example, and you

lose the power to edit it.
