ABSTRACT

The fact that remote workers are based in locations remote from the main office sites means that the logistics of keeping them supplied with the day-to-day consumables, services and tools required to do their job are of a different order to a conventional organization. This short chapter looks at the logistics that need to be considered, and put in place, before remote working is implemented for more than a handful of employees. It is practical to deal with a few people on an ad hoc basis, but once the numbers pass double figures the costs associated with poor logistics will become excessive. Suggestions have been made to provide starting points for solving these logistics problems. However, anyone planning a remote working operation will need to invest in developing, possibly involving trials with small numbers of staff, an effective logistics solution tailored to their specific needs.
