ABSTRACT
Chapter 3, the first chapter in this participants section, opened with a discussion of possible definitions of sport, of tourism and of sports tourism, and found the establishment of such definitions to be problematic. This is because, as Houlihan (1994: 4) states: ‘the more one attempts to capture the essence of meaning of a human activity, the more one becomes aware of the ambiguities and the compromises necessary to arrive at a plausible definition’.
