It is helpful to know the standard deviation in many situations where you are comparing different sets of data.Your example may be similar to this one:
‘We were comparing the times it took to perform the same task using different systems.We had the average (mean) time for each system, but it was also important to know which system was more consistent.We chose the system which had the smaller standard deviation, even though the mean time was slightly greater.’
