ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the business context in which the developer is operating. There is an important point to be made at the outset: training and development are derived activities; they take place as a consequence of business needs, not for their own sake. The aim of the organization can be variously described as driven by the need for profit (private sector), a requirement to deliver a public good or service (national or local government) or to achieve some aim considered worthwhile by a committed group of people (voluntary sector). There are multiple descriptions in between.
