ABSTRACT

The camera moves backward along the path and again crosses an increasing number of powers of ten but this time at a very fast speed. This example by Charles Eames suggests the use of interactive paths to tell stories in virtual worlds. It also shows the possibility for viewers to control a journey in space and time. This chapter focuses on the design of curves or paths used to guide the motion of 3D objects, cameras, or characters inside a virtual space. Paths can be used indiscriminately by 3D objects, cameras, 3D frames, particles, or even interactive characters. The chapter covers topics include moving on paths, switching paths, and transitions between several paths. It looks at ways to switch between being on a path and being set free without a path. The goal of the tutorial is to learn how to script a single camera using paths and to give possibility to viewer of jumping from one path to other.
