ABSTRACT

Its velocity has increased by 1 m/s in a period of 1 s. Its acceleration is 1 metre per second per second (in symbols m/s/s or m/s2).

Note the division symbol (/). To measure velocity, we divide the distance by the time. For example, if the plane flies 3 m in 2 s, its velocity is 3/2 m/s. Completing the division gives:

velocity = 1.5 m/s

From velocity we obtain acceleration. This is the amount by which the plane’s velocity increases per second. Suppose that it is flying at a velocity of 1.5 m/s and then, 1 second later, it is flying at a velocity of 2.5 m/s.
