This is not to say that your fi lm cannot get distribution deals while you are actually in production, because I’ve seen that happen on a few occasions. I was working with a fi lmmaker once who was in production of a sci-fi thriller. He had tried to secure U.S. and foreign presales during preproduction, but didn’t have any luck because he was a fi rst-time director with no high-profi le cast attached to his fi lm. He ended up raising the money for his project through a private investor and then began production.
