ABSTRACT

The term ‘‘scanning’’ is used in this text because of its familiarity. However, it should be remembered that most image capture devices today do not really ‘‘scan’’ the image; they perform something closer to a ‘‘flash’’ exposure to it. The rate or order of exposure of each photo-site in an image sensor may then be different from that specified at the interface; many television cameras, for example, expose all pixels in the frame simultaneously and subject them to sequential ordering only at the output of the sensor chip or even later in the image processing stages. Compliance with the ‘‘scanning’’ standard therefore does not occur until the external interface.
