ABSTRACT

Financial awards made by tribunals reflect at least in part the earnings potential of the employee. The very large awards sometimes made are usually to employees with high salaries, bonus earnings and other benefits which they have lost by losing the job. However, the Tribunal can also take into account more subjective matters such hurt feelings, which are not related to earnings ability. For example, an award of around £200,000 made to a headmaster for unfair dismissal included £18,000 for hurt feelings.
