Case study Leon is a qualified baker (and football fan) who noticed five years ago how popular pies and Cornish pasties were as snacks for football fans. Leon thought ‘would it be possible to also sell the patties and other delicacies that he enjoyed making?’ to fans. This he felt was a great business opportunity. He would bake and retail these delicacies and create for himself a niche market. Like many small businesses initially the going was tough but through hard work and support from family and friends the business grew. Its success was so great that from fairly humble beginnings of cooking in the kitchen at home and selling outside football grounds from a van the business boomed to the point where he was employing around 40 people mostly in non-managerial roles. He also moved the business to larger premises.
