ABSTRACT

However, by practising discrimination against older workers, the manager is potentially missing out on a raft of skills and experience not available in other staff. Older workers can bring an experienced perspective to day-to-day decision making and a better skills balance to the department/ organisation as a whole. By employing a good age range of staff you are more likely to reflect your own customer base and may attract older customers, many of whom have enormous spending power. Older staff can reduce turnover costs because they are less likely to be pursuing a career and this continuity can help the continuity of the business. This is particularly important at times when younger staff are scarce and may be lured away by employment opportunities elsewhere.
