How light is shaped, balanced and distributed within a shot plays a vital part in an image but there are a number practical considerations when deciding the overall level of light that is to be used. These include:
satisfying exposure requirements which depend on camera sensitivity
creating an appropriate depth of field
providing a good environment for artist’s performance
heat generation, ventilation, number of luminaires available, total capacity and cost of the power supply.
