ABSTRACT

In 1925 Russian film-maker Sergei Eisenstein created the Battleship Potempkin,

a film which has been described as one of the most influential films ever made.

In a single film Eisenstein showed how time could be collapsed and expanded

purely through editing technique. Barely anyone who has attended film school

will have escaped studying Eisenstein’s work. Yet this pioneer film-maker, who

has been referred to as the father of montage, used the simplest of tools to

create his masterpiece.
