ABSTRACT

According to many media reports, our concerns about our health and safety range from man-made pollutants to satanic ritual abuse, especially where these manifestations threaten other people, less resilient or less aware than ourselves. Professor Elaine Showalter of Princeton University has analysed modern attitudes to risk and explains why they have changed and what the media’s role might be. Trained in literary criticism, she has earned a significant reputation as a leading feminist historian of psychiatry.
