ABSTRACT

Following on from what you have learned about the ways people behave in groups, and how groups can be more, or less, effective, this chapter concentrates on the development and improvement of teams.

Although you may have inherited existing teams in your work, or become a member of an existing team yourself, you are likely to become involved in setting up work teams at some time or another. To do this, you will need to identify the skill or competence requirements needed in team members in relation to the demands of the task. Having done this, you need to identify and assess competences in potential team members in the same way as you needed to assess current skills in relation to recruitment and selection of new staff (Chapters 3 and 4).
